December 2023. One month after the layoff.

I walked into my CPA’s office expecting damage control.

No paycheck for November or December. Lower withholding. A severance clock already ticking.

In my head, I was already doing the math how much I’d owe, how quickly I’d need to land another job just to stay neutral.

I stared at it.
