BricksFolios Summer Business Internship Track: Real Estate Investment Analyst

Meet the Sharmas: Your Neighbors in Redmond

Picture this:

Rina is on a Teams call with her engineering team.

Samir just returned from a product review.

Their kids, Aarav and Meera, are doing homework before soccer. On the surface, things look great… but the Sharmas were starting to feel the pressure.

Despite strong incomes, they were asking:

“Are we too dependent on our jobs?

What happens if layoffs hit? The 18K+ Microsoft layoffs and buyouts, and layoffs/performance reviews at other big-tech companies like META, Amazon, Salesforce etc., have shook them.

Will we have enough for the kids’ college?

Are we doing enough to build long-term wealth to retire comfortably?”

The Wealth Roadblocks the Sharmas Faced

  • Too reliant on W-2 income
  • Market volatility made them nervous
  • High taxes with no tax saving strategy
  • $500K+ in home equity sitting idle
  • Investments not mapped to kids’ college or early retirement

With the BricksFolios Summer Business Internship, you will get the experience of an actual real estate investment analyst who is working on a real-style case involving the Sharma family living in Redmond. Both Rina and Samir have successful technology careers, but they face some concerns that many other similar families can relate to: with mass layoffs going on in large companies and all their incomes related to their jobs, they are uncertain about their future, the costs associated with sending their children to college, and retirement savings. Having more than $500K of equity in their homes and good income, they lack the strategy to decrease their tax expenses and make their investments diverse and suitable for their goals.

With this internship, you will be able to find the solutions to Sharma family problems using the real estate investing platform provided by BricksFolios. In your work, you will learn about goal-oriented investing plan creation, protecting yourself from job loss and volatile markets using real estate and such approaches as depreciation and cost segregation to cut your tax expenses, as well as analyzing different properties considering pricing, rent, opportunities for refinancing, and long-term profitability.

Thank you for your thoughtful summary Musa! You’ve clearly understood that successful investing begins with understanding a family’s goals before choosing the right strategy. Reflection of BricksFolios
I learned from this presentation that real estate is more than just renting out homes—it’s about wise investing. My key lesson is to apply their “recalibration” concept to my own life, which means that rather than hoping for a flawless, straight path, I should routinely modify my goals as circumstances change.

    Christy Johnson Reflection
Christy showed me that business skills can be used in any job, from teaching to starting a company. She inspired me to stop being afraid to talk about money and to ask more questions. My next step is to start learning about personal finance right away instead of waiting until I’m older.

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful reflection, Isa! We’re especially glad the idea of recalibrating instead of expecting a perfect path resonated with you. That’s a mindset that extends far beyond investing it applies to careers, finances, and life itself. We also love that Christy’s story inspired you to start learning about personal finance now. That decision can create opportunities that compound for years to come. Keep asking great questions and stay curious we’re excited to see where your journey takes you!

What I found interesting about Sharma’s case study is that getting a well-paying job or a high income does not necessarily correlate to having a good financial plan․ The biggest lesson I took away was the importance of aligning investments with specific life goals, whether that is retirement, education, or financial independence. This taught me that wealth building is not simply about asset accumulation but also about making strategic decisions with the resources you already have.

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful reflection! You’ve highlighted one of the most important lessons from the Sharma case study: wealth isn’t determined by income alone it’s driven by having a clear strategy aligned with your goals. We especially like your observation that financial independence comes from making intentional decisions with the resources you already have. That’s the mindset we’re hoping every intern develops. Keep connecting the concepts to real life and continue asking thoughtful questions—you’re off to a great start!

This case study showed me that the standard path that’s taken by people is not stable and is not enough for being successful in today’s society. There’s market volatility, and an unstable market means that the stable job you have isn’t stable anymore. Plus, homes have been rising in tappable equity, and the Sharma’s show that their house has 500K worth of tappable equity. It very clearly shows that people should not be dependent on their jobs for all of their income. You need to be able to put your eggs in different baskets in order to achieve success.

      growthcatalysts061e8565bb

Thank you for your thoughtful reflection, Vishnu! You’ve identified an important lesson from the Sharma case study: relying on a single source of income can create unnecessary risk, especially in today’s changing economy. We also appreciate that you recognized the value of diversification and building assets that align with your long-term goals. Wealth isn’t just about earning more—it’s about making strategic decisions that create financial resilience. Keep thinking critically and connecting these concepts to real-world situations. Great work!

    1. BricksFolios Smart Portfolio System

One of the biggest things I learned was that investing should begin with your life goals, not with choosing random properties. The Smart Portfolio System showed how you can work backward from goals like paying for college, retirement, or achieving financial independence, then build a strategy around them.

I used to think building wealth was mostly about buying good investments whenever opportunities came up. Today’s session challenged that by showing how having a long-term plan, understanding cash flow, equity growth, and financing decisions can make a much bigger difference than simply picking a property.

One lesson I can apply in my own life is to set clear financial goals first and then choose investments that support those goals instead of investing without a defined plan. That mindset can apply to stocks, real estate, and other investments.

    2. Guest Speaker Reflection, Christy Johnson

I liked how she emphasized resilience and staying curious. It reminded me that setbacks are part of the process, and learning from them is what helps you improve.

One idea that stood out was taking action instead of waiting for everything to be perfect. Entrepreneurship is about making progress, learning along the way, and adapting when things don’t go as planned.

One action I want to take after today’s session is to keep building my skills by working on real projects and asking more questions instead of worrying about having all the answers before I start.

Thank you for such a thoughtful reflection, Avyay! We love that you recognized one of the core principles of the BricksFolios Smart Portfolio System: start with your life goals, then build an investment strategy to support them. Your takeaway about taking action before everything feels perfect is equally powerful progress comes from learning, adapting, and staying curious along the way. We’re excited to see you continue applying these ideas throughout the internship. Keep asking questions, embracing challenges, and building with intention. Great work!

It sort of did change the way I look at wealth by taking a step back from the situation and really seeing how certain factors affect each other and how they can be used to your benefit instead of jumping into conclusions. These are things such as your goals, having a long term plan, planning everything out, etc.

It challenged a concept that I used to believe of “higher interest rates is bad because you have to pay more money” into actually taking a deeper dive and seeing how that actually benefits you in the long run.

One lesson I can apply in my own life is instead of just assuming certain things to actually taking a step back to see the bigger picture of how everything works together in the favor of my benefit. This is sort of the concept of seeing the unseen that everybody else usually misses out on understanding.

    2. Guest Speaker – Christy Johnson

One story that stayed with me was her explaining the initial problems she had with her business partner when making a startup, it really showed me how is glamorous in business and entrepreneurship as people make it be and it takes a lot of pain and sacrifice.

A piece of advice that challenged my thinking was instead of just putting time towards learning it is also even more important to take action as the failures and hardships you get will be the best teacher of what to actually improve.

One action I am actually motivated towards taking after listening to her would be to learn an actual high value skill that would benefit me later on when I actually go and start a business such as sales, leadership, etc.

From this case study I understood that with the arrival of AI a lot of people are at a big risk of losing their job and their financial stability. That is why it is important to take action towards having an investment portfolio to have sort of a financial backup in case things go wrong. Additionally it is important to understand your current financial situation and fix your current problems instead of mindlessly earning money through your secure job as these problems can get worse and worse in the future when ultimately it will be very difficult to fix.

This case study hit close to home. Before this internship, I assumed that a high-paying job was the ultimate safety net. But the Sharma family’s situation showed me that even strong incomes can feel fragile if they aren’t backed by a real strategy. The part about having $500K+ in home equity sitting idle really stood out to me. It made me realize that wealth isn’t just about what you earn—it’s about what you do with what you already have. I’m excited to learn how the BricksFolios SPS turns that idle equity into an active wealth engine.

      growthcatalysts061e8565bb

Thank you, Sakina! I really appreciate that you connected the case study to your own perspective. One of the biggest shifts in wealth building is realizing that financial security isn’t defined by income alone it’s shaped by how intentionally you use the assets and opportunities you already have. Keep asking these deeper questions and challenging assumptions. That’s where meaningful learning begins.
